Gripping novel from start to finish.
Great as usual!Historically acurate, wonderful characters!Can't wait for Part XIII
I'm always amazed at how Mr Turney manages to appeal to this self-avowed Jane Austen fanatic, time and time again, through every series he writes.Not only that, but this American, who knew little to nothing about Caesar's conquests, has been enthralled to follow along as the main character Fronto has fought his way across Gaul, Britannia, Spain, etc, etc.Previously (in book XI) Fronto followed Caesar as he chased Pompey, only to have Pompey meet a fitting end, and now finds himself enmeshed in the intrigues of the Egyptian court, then in the problems of other Eastern kingdoms.This book breathes life into a part of history I always considered rather dull. I've always rather admired Cleopatra, for being a strong woman in a difficult time, but this puts a bit of a different slant on things. A Roman slant, not a romantic, "Wow wasn't Cleopatra so awesome" slant, which is what I've been accustomed to. (Then again, there is Ann Rice's book, Ramses the Damned, to give a horrific slant to that character)In any event, Fronto finds himself in danger numerous times, which is to be expected and he finds surprising ways to succeed in these trying circumstances.I've always enjoyed the way Simon breathes life into the dry accounts of history. Maybe it happened that way, maybe it didn't, but in the end, Caesar was victorious, and (hopefully) the Romans get to go home for a bit.All I gotta say is, thank Fortuna that Lucilia is a military brat, otherwise she'd have Fronto's head on a spear!
I have read all these books and completely enjoyed every one. Turney never disappoints me in this series. Of course, he has chosen my favorite Roman character to follow that being the complex and controversial Julius Caeser. Still, don't read this unless you start with the first one. You will find the series the best Roman historical novels written. Enjoy!
For some reason I expected better early chapters. I finally got into the story towards the end. I would have liked to know more about the rogue King before that part of the story began. I get the impression that Caesar isn't needed in the story since Fronto comes up with the winning ideas. Despite all that I like the series and will read the last three books.
I keep looking to find the historical reference for Fronto , he’s real ! I feel like I know Caesar, Cleopatra and Fronto. I sweat with the Romans at there every movement. Simon writes a believable version of history. I highly recommend all of the Marius Mules novels .
I have followed this series from its beginning, and literally jumped on this when it appeared. I'm sorry to hear there are only three more books of Marius' Mules yet to come but I'll certainly get them all.
